Rain-sensing wipers, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats and Mazda’s connected services all come standard, with wireless charging, surround-view monitoring and other extras optional. The CX-5 gets top marks from IIHS and NHTSA and comes with lots of active-safety features including adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring. Happily, Mazda is very generous with standard safety features and makes lots of nice technology available. There’s definitely enough cargo volume to satisfy a family of four, but far less than some newer alternatives. The back seat has a generous amount of room on paper but feels only average in person. You get used to it, but other systems are easier to use. The rotary-dial infotainment system, which resembles an older version of BMW’s iDrive, is clunky and dated. It’s also where the Mazda’s weaknesses, and age, are most apparent. Inside, the CX-5’s cabin still feels richer than many popular-brand crossovers but not as lavish as Audi or BMW. Sadly, getting the most out of the Turbo CX-5 requires premium gas (horsepower drops to 227 on 87), but it’s a credible rival to the BMW X1 or base-model Audi Q5 in performance terms. The base engine will do fine for many, but the turbo is the star of the show. The precise steering and supple suspension make for a much more engaging drive than most other family crossovers, and it looks good too. Like Mazda’s other products, the CX-5 is long on fun and style. Its shape may be several years old, but the 2023 Mazda CX-5 is still a handsome machine, and one with athletic moves to match. The CX-5 is lighter and fractionally faster, but it seems like the CX-50 will eventually replace it just as the CX-30 replaced the old CX-3. Plus, there’s the CX-50, which is dimensionally similar to the CX-5, gets slightly better gas mileage and offers more off-road capability. CX-5 buyers are often seeking something more interesting or fun than a Toyota RAV4, but the RAV4 Prime offers that choice, and there are also newer entries like the Hyundai Tucson, Ford Bronco Sport, Subaru Forester and Volkswagen Tiguan. That’s not to say that the other CX-5 aren’t worthy and fun, but the turbo really makes this crossover shine and it’s worth the extra spend.īut there are also many alternatives. Mazda offers a dizzying array of eight trim lines priced from $27,975 to $40,925, but only the top two get the best piece of equipment: the 256-horsepower turbocharged engine.

Mazda crossover price update#
Also, after six years on the market there are many new and improved alternatives, including Mazda’s own brand-new CX-50.Īfter an infotainment update in 2021 and even more changes in 2022-making all-wheel drive (AWD) standard, upping the power of the turbo and slightly tweaking the styling-the 2023 CX-5 gets no big changes. With lots of family-friendly practicality, looks that would flatter an Alfa Romeo and BMW-like dynamics at a Hyundai-like price, the CX-5 has lots to like, but it does have some weaknesses. The Mazda CX-5 has been a top compact crossover contender ever since its introduction a decade ago, and its 2017 redesign only improved it.
